On her blog, Gisele tells us about her visit to the Mt. Kenya region, the most lush and green place of all the places she visited in Kenya. But this area has a serious problem: only 4% of the local villagers have access to electricity.
As a solution, they have developed micro hydro-electric power stations that are supplying electricity to over 2,000 households. A micro-hydro system is a small scale power grid that creates electricity from the force of moving water.
Gisele recalls her favorite moment of this visit: “A highlight of my visit was meeting a woman in her 80s who was one of the first people to receive power in her home from the micro-hydro system. She was so proud to show me her radio that is powered by the new source of electricity! She reminded me to appreciate the joys that can come from the simple things in life.”
